In the tent just beside the main floor the fat is in the fire: Cocoon’s back again. No freak show, but this time Disco Invaders from Frankfurt will thrill this year’s SMS. Among other things they beamed Swedish Minilogues down from the Cocoon starship, whose album “Animals” on Cocoon Recordings is a real zinger. Dubfire from DeepDish premières on SMS as well, fighting lightsabres from other directions. All in all, you’ll experience one supernova after another. Groove commander Ricardo Villalobos and James Holden will amongst others heat up the turntables. Furthermore, Extrawelt (live), Chris Tietjen, D.Diggler, Jacek Sienkiewicz (live) and Frank Lorber will provide all their energy to bring SMS to high speed until Raresh will let off the last photon topedos. Get ready for a great sound explosion and run for cover!
What a feeling to have been dancing for ten years!
Years ago, we still had long Thursdays, we were young and wanted to produce a record! What has become of it? Ten years of highly energetic sensation of life with edgy musicality, respectively spending happy days with cheerful, electronic hogwash and being able to fill our fridges with the help of that guff. You could caption that with the words of Tocotronic: “The youngsters have built it up themselves.” The specially staged cultural business in the vintage clubbing institution Kassablanca in Jena city functioned as source of power for the ultimate firing.
The love for things which are great fun was linked with high quality efficiency. Even without fashionable haircuts and those smart scarves, we knew how to deeply influence the dance floor bustle with record releases and an intensive dialogue with the audience by crowding the clubs. We took the liberty to give birth to another label – oddly named Musikkrause – for all interests with affinity to clubbing and eagerness for experiments. Established another bazaar for vinyl called Fatplastics to satisfy the herd of record junkies, evolved into an organic culture of musical consumerism, and to leave them to their passion broke but hale and hearty.
A constant demand for high quality club devotion with compositional courage and logic for progress was created with the most delicate perception, provincial composure and the understanding of producing music that will remain relevant for a long time. With a keen eye on the future and the right blend of tradition, down-to-earthness and intuition those parameters will keep on flourishing toward philanthropy within the synthetic paradise of electronic music. We have to maintain an exceptional status quo without delusion of grandeur.
Just as the German TV character Stromberg has phrased it: „We’re not going to let somebody put one over on us!”
This year the operators of Ostcode-Board and the Thuringian booking and event agency unruhigenaechte will together take over the musical programme of one marquee. The well-known artists present electronic music from experimental to strong, straight and broken styles. The following artists are in on it: Michael Forshaw, Der Totmacher, Ducksfunk, 2Face, Subtrak, Super Magnet, The Dwarf, Pat van Stone, Siebenschläfer, Djane Bux vs Vinyl D, GrÜnÄäs, Amphetamin and Needlebreaker. Ducksfunk is a live project by the Swiss artists Nino Fight and Seems. They present a style which can be described as electronic futurefunk and perform in self-tailored costumes and with some fancy musical instruments. Michael Forshaw and Der Totmacher will in cooperation feature a live performance with a mixture of broken and straight rhythm as well as experimental and hard sounds.

For the fifth year on the bounce, Broken Harmony proudly present the Breaks’n Drums tent at your favourite festival. On this account, the Weimar crew has invited the two drum&bass icons DJ Krust and Nicky Blackmarket. There’s not need to give you details about those two, except for that you could replace drum&bass by Krust&Nicky. MTC Yaw (Form Recordings), Humpty C (Royal Rumble) and the Broken Harmony crew will round off the evening. Since MCs and Drum&Bass go together like summer and sun, MC Soultrain (Berlin) and MC Dragoon (Heidelberg) will jointly rock the mic. Consider that this evening will be MC Dragoon’s last gig, with which he wants to say goodbye to his active duty as an MC to concentrate on his real vocation.
Same procedure as every year. Once again, there will be a CJ contest in co-operation with Broken Harmony drum&bass mixshow “Wildwechsel” (‘game pass’) on radio TOP40. Well, has one year already passed?
While these lines come into being, everybody is still muffled in cosy clothes and the only thing that keeps us warm is the fireplace amidst our little Muna cosmos. But the first sun rays are struggling through the wintry-dirty windows. They arouse the wish and anticipation for a wacky, raving weekend full of surprises down at our outdoor base right beside the Bleilochtalsperre, which will once again soak its energy out of the sweating, dancing, laughing and hugging young people. The construction elements for Muna are bass, live music and never stopping turntables. Muna will turn this very weekend into a unforgettable und unbelievable event, from which it will be hard to return to a life without canned ravioli, sleeping bags and tents. Captain Muna and all its commissioned officers are looking forward to seeing you at SMS 2008.
“Waterfloor” or “Waterstage”, this is what the 2nd stage was called last year when it was surrounded by water (because the rain came down in sheets). Now that for summer 2008 the weather forecast says it will be a sunny weekend, once more the stage will be at the shore of the reservoir. There will be a well-balanced programme with artists from throughout the eastern part of Germany. While Friday will be rather ‘quiet’ with some house and electro music, Saturday will be way harder. No matter whether DJ set or live act, the main thing is it rocks the crowd. The special act of the evening will be no less a figure than Mr Oliver Lieb, who is known for projects like Solieb and Maschine ltd. On his set, he will make clear his idea of techno. Like every year, it is the warm up for their own festival “Summer Spirit”, which takes place a fortnight after SMS on 29.–31.08.2008 at their home base Niedergörsdorf. This year, it’s their 10th anniversary.
Let’s go for the sixth hilarious boat party by the FRESHest pocketsize component on the scene. Meet FRESHGUIDE at the most popular festival under the radiant sun – as well as moon and stars – of eastern Germany. In co-operation with ULLSWATERSCHMIDT we are mooring where the sound odyssey longingly ended last year and will beef up the otherwise idyllic excursion steamer and the passengers as usual. Cast off, full speed ahead and don’t forget your sun cream, everybody board the FRESHBOAT on Saturday at noon to relax and drift with smooth “SunshineHouse” and cool drinks. Get on board for a musical cruise towards sunset on Bleilochtalsperre every hour - powered by the phattest beats of our freshest vinyl-captains. Set sails with the FRESHBOAT for its last turn at 9 pm and rave on when the crew will cast anchor for groovy electro sounds and booming techno beats until dawn sends all sailors to berth.
